Our Story...
In the spring of 2003, we were mountain climbing with our Xtreme BMX combo bike & hang-gliders in New Zealand. At the base of a cliff, we came upon a strange rock that was moaning and wore a red jacket. As we approached, we could see that it was a woman curled in a fetal position, eyes glued to her watch. “The fiscal meeting lasted five hours,” she kept saying, “Five hours!”
You guessed it. Another escapee from a non-profit board. She had taken on the role of treasurer and been swiftly defeated by endless explanations to board members with only scraps of paper from the previous treasurer as precious proof.
We put down our Xtreme bike hang-gliders and listened. We had been volunteers in volunteer-run nonprofits ourselves. We had bitten our nails, sat on our hands and spoken our truths. We survived our respective board terms by dreaming of heroic ways to solve problems when we finally escaped. Scaling mountains with crampon-equipped bikes was what we were doing to kill time while we waited for the right problem to speak to us. When we nearly stumbled over Getta Life, the volunteer in the red jacket, we realized our time had come. First we looked around, asked other volunteers on the planet if they had used anything that eased the pain of treasurer reporting and budgeting. Not a whimper. Not a thing.
That’s when MoneyMinder was conceived. It’s the result of our many years in technology, accounting, and system design. (We designed our Xtreme bikes). And our drive to solve problems that no one else has figured out.
MoneyMinder hit the national stage one customer at a time, and we went on the road every year to meet the people who were already using it, or didn’t know yet that they needed it. We're grateful that we've had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many people who take up the volunteer challenge. We know their organizations are stronger because we had a vision, took a risk, scaled the mountain and brought back the bacon.
